ETS Information Notice
Dear Customer,
We would like to inform you that European Directive (EU) 2023/959 came into force in 2024, including the maritime sector in the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), an instrument adopted by the European Union to encourage the green transition of our economies.
This directive requires shipping companies to purchase EUA allowances on the regulated CO₂ market (EUA: European Union Allowance, equivalent to 1 ton of CO₂ emitted) to offset their emissions.
The European Directive established a progressive increase in the percentage of emissions used to calculate shipping companies' EUA surrender obligations, and as of January 1, 2026, this percentage reached a maximum rate of 100%. Effective January 1, 2025, further legislation came into force, namely Regulation (EU) 2023/1805, which aims to decarbonize maritime transport by establishing greenhouse gas intensity reduction targets for fuels used in the sector. It is part of the European "Fit for 55" climate legislative package. This regulation, which entered into force progressively from 2025, defines the verification procedures through accredited bodies and requires monitoring plans and specific reports (Fuel EU) for ships.
This Regulation also requires shipping companies to report the CO₂ emissions produced during the operation of their ships, and the resulting obligation for companies to pay penalties for emissions exceeding the thresholds set in the Regulation. These thresholds, too, are increasingly stringent and progressive over time.
During 2024 and 2025, the undersigned Company decided to pass on a small percentage of the expected costs of these penalties to the selling prices of its services, and has assumed direct responsibility for over 75% of the costs of the FuelEu and EUA penalties imposed by current regulations.
As highlighted above, a substantial increase in these penalties is expected in 2026 which the Shipowner is no longer able to absorb directly and is therefore forced to apply an increase of Euro 5.00, for each paying unit, compared to what is currently foreseen as the “ETS Surcharge”.
In light of the above, effective January 16, 2026, an "ETS Surcharge" of €13.00 will be applied for each paying unit included in the ticket issued, for routes operated by the undersigned on the Ancona-Durrës and Ancona-Bar routes and vice versa.
Starting from the same date mentioned above, the "ETS Surcharge" for routes operated by the undersigned on the Bari-Durrës route and vice versa will be €10.00 for each paying unit included in the ticket issued.
The ETS Surcharge will be calculated based on the CO₂ emissions of each of our vessels and the price of the EUA quota, and for these reasons, it may be subject to change and recalculation in the coming months.
Finally, we remind you that Adria Ferries has always been committed to supporting national and international environmental policies through the constant renewal of its fleet and investments in more efficient technologies aimed at reducing polluting emissions and implementing alternative fuels.
Thanks to the significant investments made by the company over the years, this ETS Surcharge is significantly reduced.
