NEWS  The East Port Authority - ORDINANCE n. 3/2013

Bari: the pearl of the East

Lying on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, Bari is the main city of the Apulia region and a major tourist and commercial port. The city combines the scents and flavours typical of a seaside town with the stronger and more intense ones of its hinterland. Lying between the Balkans and the Mediterranean, it is the bridge to Central Europe, so much so that it is one of the principal destinations of Orthodox Christians. The relics of Saint Nicholas are enshrined here in the Basilica of the same name. The city is divided into three separate parts: the old town, corresponding with the original medieval settlement, where the town’s social and business activities take place; the new town, home to more elegant shops, cinemas, theatres and public offices; the industrial area and link between the centre and the countryside.

What to eat in Bari:

Visiting Bari offers the chance to stroll through the streets of the old town and enjoy the fragrances of its traditional cuisine. The culinary delights of Bari are present in its alleyways and homes, which carry forward a tradition that can be considered as a heritage of humanity, based on experience and passion passed down from generation to generation. The basic ingredients of the local cuisine are simple and natural products, combined to create delicious and healthy dishes.

The brasciole meat rolls, orecchiette pasta, mussels, turnip greens and broad beans are just a few of the traditional dishes available in all the restaurants, inns and taverns present along the splendid eastern coastline.

Where to sleep in Bari:

There are plenty of places to stay for anyone wishing to visit the city. The best place to stay is definitely the centre. Although it is more expensive, it is close to all the attractions and to the sea and easy to visit on foot, as well as being very attractive and characteristic. Poggiofranco is a new residential area offering places to stay. It is further from the city centre and the sea, but also cheaper.

The port of Bari:

The port of Bari, port of the Levant, is located in South-east Italy and a multi-purpose terminal handling traffic of almost two million passengers a year. It is one of the major ports on the Adriatic Sea for carriage of people and goods to Albania. With its fleet of vessels on the Albania route, Adria Ferries guarantees a direct outward and return service for Durrës all year round. The port is divided into two areas, one for commercial and passenger traffic, with services such as guarded and free parking, shops, supermarkets and cashpoint machines, and the other for fishing and small private boats.

The characteristic port is easy to reach through particularly efficient links with the airport, railway station and buses. By car, take the A14 motorway to Bari and follow the road signs to your destination.
